Preamble

by Gisella Gellini

Light Art in Italy 2010, the third edition of the book which annually offers a concise overview on the works and installations of Light Art realized in our country, is dedicated to Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, the great contemporary art collector whose death left a big void. He left us with far-sightedness the permanent Light Art installations of the 1970s in the Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza di Biumo (Varese), which he donated to FAI (the Italian Fund for the Environment) and which is open daily to the public, displaying, among others, environmental artworks and monochromes that constitute a great stimulus for all the people who want to work in the world of Light.

Preamble

by Gisella Gellini

This is the second edition of ‘Light Art in Italy’, requested by the publisher after the success of the first one in 2007. We still aim to valorize and to convey the expressive and artistic values of lighting, one of the excellences of Italian Design. In the words of Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, one of the most important collectors and experts of Light Art: ‘We are not aware that, if we are what we are today, it is thanks to the Past; it is the Past that allows us to live our lives and improve our future. If memory was lost, we would go back to being wild animals, as we were some millions years ago.[…]Knowing the context in which an ‘artwork’ is born is also very important. Art is the expression of the ideas, of the political, social, cultural and philosophical conditions of a certain society.’ (more…)
